Principal, E3 Rochester
Mr. Hickman is Executive Director of E3 Rochester, Inc., a not-for-profit whose goal is to improve the educational opportunities and choices for students living in the City of Rochester. E3 has supported the opening of several charter schools and runs the parent information portal and charter school application system for all charter schools in Rochester (GoodSchoolsRoc.org)
Mr. Hickman started his career with a 2-year stint in the US Army assigned to a team installing the lottery system for the draft and spent 5 more years in Washington with a small think tank working on a range of public policy studies. He then turned to a business career, starting in corporate planning, moving into operations and then turning around bankrupt companies.
When he sold his last company in 2011, he decided to devote himself to helping children better prepare for good jobs and citizenship. He has traveled to 32 cities, visited over 100 charter schools, and attended many national conferences relating to urban education. He was founding board chair of Vertus Charter School, and has assisted the startup of several other charter schools. He believes that the district school model is broken, serving its students poorly because it is so mired in legal, bureaucratic, and union contract constraints that it cannot behave as successful modern organizations do: flexible, fast-moving and customer oriented. Therefore, he is committed to helping build schools that work.
Mr. Hickman has a BA in economics from Williams College and a Masters in Public Affairs from
Princeton University, School of Public and International Affairs. He also studied mechanical engineering at RIT’s night school.
