Subject: SPED Teacher

How long have you been a teacher?

I have been teaching for three years. I began my career as a part of Hillside Family of Agencies instructing adults in OPWDD services running a day habilitation and provocation program. I then transferred to a Highschool in the agency where I served as a high school special education teacher. I have experience teaching English, Science and History. Through this experience I developed a passion for advocating for youth who experienced trauma. I am TIC certified and have experience leading restorative justice circles.

What is your philosophy as a teacher?

I believe that as a teacher my role is to help foster a community of honesty and respect. I believe that high school is a pivotal time for students and they need guidance to become individuals who think deeply about themselves and the world around them. When individuals feel safe enough to ask the deeper questions, true learning can be done. My role is to help my students understand how the material we are learning relates to them and the world around them.

What motivates you to be at Vertus? (what is your “why?")

I have lived in Rochester for most of my life. I believe in the future of our youth and in the community of Rochester as a whole. I am passionate about helping the young people in our city believe in the best versions of themselves and providing them the tools they need to be whoever they want to be. The people at Vertus share the same values and are actively aspiring to bridge the gaps between school and community and provide an inclusive learning environment that addresses the students individual needs. I have never been a part of any other school that has been structured in this way. I am excited to be a part of the Vertus difference.

Who are you outside of Vertus?

I am a woman who is constantly trying to grow into the best version of myself. I love to travel and seek to have my perspective challenged by the different people I encounter. Art is the language I speak best and I enjoy working on my art business outside of work. I believe that art can be a powerful tool to help people and I am currently attending Edinboro University (now Pennwest) for a master's degree in counseling with a concentration in art therapy. When I have time to relax I enjoy riding my motorcycle, spending time in nature and cooking or baking for my friends and family.

What is your motivational message for students, current or future?

"No matter what type of day you are having, you can always work toward your goals. If you can, run toward them. If you can't run toward them, walk. If you can't walk, sit in the direction you want to go." "The greatest danger for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark" -Michelangelo
